1992: Big names and big debuts

It’s a safe bet that some of your favorite artists released records in 1992.

There were albums from Indigo Girls, R.E.M., Los Lobos, The Cure, Tori Amos, Lucinda Williams, Morrissey, Ween, Bruce Springsteen and The Flaming Lips, just to name a few.

We were in the early days of a “third wave ska” revival, promulgated by releases from No Doubt, Sublime, Rancid and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

Debuts from Pavement, Mary J Blige, TLC, Stone Temple Pilots, Common, 4 Non Blondes, Rage Against the Machine and Dr. Dre (as a solo artist) promised an exciting and varied crop of new artists.

It was a also a year pop culture controversy: while hosting Saturday Night Live, Sinead O’Connor tears up a photo of the Pope on live TV.

Check out some of 1992’s biggest songs below and let us know if it was the Greatest Year in Music in the comments or across social media with #XPNGreatestYear.
