2001: Alicia Keys, John Mayer, Daft Punk

The turn of the century gave us a new group of musicians to love.

2001 marked the debuts of Alicia Keys, The Strokes, John Mayer, India.Arie and Jack Johnson. Key’s album Songs in A Minor won five Grammy Awards.

Indie rock had strong support with efforts from The Shins, Guided By Voices, The White Stripes, Radiohead and Spoon, while Daft Punk and the new Damon Albarn project Gorillaz held down the electronic end.

Janet Jackson had a major radio hit with “All for You” off of the album of the same name, a crossover single that broke airplay records and became the year’s biggest song.

2001 was full of other much-loved radio singles, like Pete Yorn’s “Strange Condition,” Train’s “Drops of Jupiter” and Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor.”
